56 | eMail from Lorraine Klassen March 18, 2015: McCANN FAMILY PLAYED PART IN BALMORAL DEVELOPMENT This is another in a series of articles on the pioneers of Red Deer and district. The articles are being contribued by the Archives Committee as its centennial project. HENRY W. McCANN A family who contributed a full share to the development of the Balmoral District into one of the finest farming districts in Western Canada was that of Henry Withel McCann. He was born at Vankleek Hill, Ontario in l848 and later moved to the Bracebridge district and he was married at Bracebridge, Ont. in l876. His wife Margaret was born near Londonderry, Ire., in l852 and came to Canada when quite young. In the Spring of l896 with their family of seven children, they came to Red Deer and took up land in the Balmoral district, Mr. McCann was a sound practical farmer who, with the aid of his sons, made steady progress. In the Spring of l911 he augmented his holdings by purchasing Nl/2 l-30-27 W 4th from the Saskatchewan Land and Homestead Company and by l921 all of his four sons were farming on an independent basis. Both Mr. and Mrs. McCann were members of the Presbyterian Church and Mrs. McCann whose home was noted for its generous hospitality in the early days was active in the Balmoral Ladies Aid. After a serious illness lasting two years, Mr. McCann died at his home in 1921 at the age of 73. Mrs. McCann, a woman of the true pioneer type; kindly, neighborly, helpful and courageous through all the trials and difficulties of the early days, remined on the farm until l981 when she moved to Red Deer. After enjoying fairly good health up to that time she suffered a stroke in February l933, from which she never rallied and she died on April l5, l933 at the age of 82. Both Mr. and Mrs. McCann are buried in the Red Deer Cemetary. Of the family of four sons and three daughters, Samuel William McCann, the eldest son, was born at Port Hope, Ont. in l878 and moved to Bracebridge at the age of two. He came to Red Deer with his parents in the spring of l896 and the following year he started farming on his own in the Balmoral District, 5 miles east of Red Deer. He was married on Sept 22, l910 to Evelyn McInroy of Pilot Mound, Man. and 8 of their 9 children were born on the Balmoral Farm. In the fall of l929 they moved to Fawcett Alberta where they farmed until l960, when they retired and moved into Fawcett. Mrs. McCann died in l964 at the age of 87. Of their family of six sons and three daughters, John, Harry, Tom, Bill Ralph, Margaret (Mrs. W. J. Alexander) and Marion (Mrs. R. Hensch) are all living in Fawcell. Hugh is living in Edmonton and Betty (Mrs. K. N. Nelson) was living at Cold Lake. John McCann, who was born in l881 started farming on his own in l908, and on June 30, l913 he was married to Ida May Piper of Watford, Ont. A niece of William Piper who was born in Ontario in l880. He was intensely interested in horses and took a chill while attending the Lacombe Stampede on July 3, 1928 which developed into septic poisoning. An attempt was made to bring him to Red Deer Hospital by ambulance but his condition was more serious than the family realized and he died before the ambulance reached its destination. He was 47, Mrs. McCann survived him by over 36 years and died at Brantford, Ont.on Feb 4th, 1961 at the age of 81. A daughter Mrs. Norman Parks was then living at Swift Current, Sask. and a son, Allan was living at Bonanza, Alta. Both Mr. and Mrs. McCann are buried in the Red Deer Cemetery. Thomas Andrew McCann was born in Ontario and came west with the family in l896. During the First World War he enlisted with the l87th Central Alberta Battalion and served in France with the 50th Battalion and after returning from overseas he farmed in the Balmoral district until l942. He then moved to the Cottonwood district, where he farmed until forced to turn to lighter work in l948, and he subsequently operated a store on the Medicine River, west of Innisfail. He was a member of Kenilworth Lodge No. 29 A.F.and A.M. and of the Canadian Legion. Following a lengthy illness he died in Innisfail Hospital on Oct. l7, l949 and he is buried in the Red Deer Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, two daughters, Lois and Maxime (Maxine) and three sons, Lyle Jack and Clifford, at home, and one son Grant in Red Deer. Robert W. McCann after earlier farming in the Balmoral District later lived in Edmonoton and susequently in British Columbia. Of the three daughters of Mr. and Mrs. H.W. McCann, Mrs. Matt Gilbert lived in Delburne and later moved to Red Deer and Mrs. George E. Lampert, whose husband was born on Oct 22, l885 and came from Kansas to homestead in the Great Bend District in l905 has lived in Delburne since her husband retired there in l947. Mamie Isabelle was married to Alvin John Dewitt of Lavesta, Alberta on Dec 20 1913 and subsequently lived at Rimbey and Kelowna, B.C. | McCann, Henry Withel Wellesley (I364)
