=======================================================

The following information is an exact quote of a page in Dorothy Isabella Urquhart's genealogy notes. There are differences in name spelling and possibly other items, but I have quoted it exactly as I found it typewritten. This may help future research. - Donald Gordon Poyner

Start of quoted text: -------------------------------

Elias Lennard Urquhart was born January 15, 1846 in the seventh concession of the township of Kenyon, County of Glengarry. He is of Scotch-Irish parentage, his father, James Urquhart, was born in Glengarry and his mother, Margaret Lennard, was born in Ireland. He was baptized in the Presbyterian Church in Williamstown. He moved with his family onto the farm belonging to his grandfather James Urquhart, in the township of Charlottenburg which his father purchased. He commenced school at the age of six, going to a log school house at what was known as McGillivray's Bridge, a mile and a half from his home. His first teacher was R. D. McArthur, who was later a prominent doctor. Mr. Urquhart remained on the farm until he was past 19 and then went to New York State where he worked for a farmer during the summer of 1865. He fought in the New York regiment during the last six months of the Civil War, following which he returned home for a short time and came to Michigan in December of 1865 to work in the lumber woods. Here is worked at the various jobs of chopping, sawing, driving oxen and horses and took part in the spring drive of logs on the Tamarac and Muskegan Rivers. In the summer time he worked in the sawmills and on the boom sorting logs, and also worked in the woods part of the time. In 1870 he came to Wisconsin to look for a brother, Alexander James, whom he had not seen for ten years. He spent a year at Wausau on the Wisconsin River working in the woods and finally located his brother at Oconto where he settled. In 1874 he married Catherine (Katie) Devereaux of Ottawa and had a family of ten children. In 1876 he was elected Justice of the Peace of Oconto. However, he resigned the same year and went to take charge of the woods work for John Duncan in Westboro. In 1878 he was elected chairman of the town of Westboro and the next year chairman of the Taylor Board of supervisors. In 1879 he was elected sheriff of the county and moved to Medford in 1880. After one term as sherriff he returned to his customary work of surveying and estimating timber until 1890 when he was appointed postmaster which post he held for years. From this time until he died in 1934 at the age of 88 he served most of his time on the Taylor County Board usually as chairman. He was also a member of the legislature at one time and also mayor of Medford. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and was Past Grand Senior Warden of the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin and Past Grand High Priest of the Grand Chapter of Wisconsin.
